Living Chronically
A monthly podcast on living with chronic conditions and disability
Mission of the Living Chronically
Almost 130 million people in the U.S. live with a chronic illness or disability such as heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, multiple sclerosis or medically managed cancer. To serve this important and growing population, UC San Diego’s Department of Communication will launch “Living Chronically,” a new monthly podcast dedicated to highlighting the experiences of people living with chronic conditions. The first episode will air in January 2025.
An accurate diagnosis; awareness of your health challenges, and care providers that you trust are all key to living with chronic conditions. But there is much more to learn and discuss about living our best lives. We present diverse viewpoints on adapting to life changing conditions, and share the experiences of people living with chronic conditions and those who live alongside and care for them.
Kicking off our first season in January 2025, the crew of Living Chronically ponders,
A Day at the Beach?
San Diego, a place where you can enjoy some good food, a world class zoo, and good weather year round. When picturing San Diego, the typical image that comes to mind is seagulls, palm trees and gorgeous waves at the beach. Whether you’re having a picnic at sunset cliffs, surfing at pacific beach, or enjoying a day in the sand at Coronado, the beach is a cultural staple of San Diego. However, many people with disabilities and chronic illness face challenges on having a typical San Diego day.
Our first episode is about accessibility when going to the beach in San Diego and some of the difficulties that might arise along the way. We look at modes of transportation such as public transit, (bus and trolly) and access to ride-hailing services (Uber & Lyft). We also dive deep into the services local beaches provide to make them more accessible and adapted for those who need it. We hope that you can gain an understanding of how the mere task of going to the beach can be difficult for those living with chronic health conditions.
